It’s a new year…
December 31, 2006
Welcome to 2007, well not quite yet. I will be heading out soon and will be in no condition to write tomorrow. I will start the new year off with a quote.
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.
-John Stuart Mill
I started this blog in February of 2006 after coming to the realization that I could not remember any of my accomplishments from 2005. It has been a very successful year for ASM and I hope to have another successful year in 2007. I would like to thank all of my loyal readers and also thank those who randomly drop by to leave a note.
In order to keep ASM moving in a forward direction I feel it is necessary to make a few changes. The first of which was to change the look and feel of the blog. I am very pleased with this change and it seems you are as well. The other change coming very soon is the addition of other authors on the blog. I am still searching for motivated Soldiers, Airmen, Marines, and Sailors who would like to author articles for ASM. I feel that with additional authors this site will be kept updated more often with more timely articles.
Again, thank you for all your support and Happy New Year!
It’s too bad that stupidity isn’t painful…
December 29, 2006
I was just over at CNN.com reading an article covering an AP/AOL “News” poll. The main point of the article was to highlight the fact that President Bush was voted both Hero of the Year, as well as, Villain of the Year. Somehow it puzzles me that he can be voted both, but that really is not the point.
According to the article when asked the villain who first came to mind, President Bush beat out even Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein by what was called a landslide. I hate to say it but it seems that the majority of Americans have forgotten what terrible atrocities these two have sponsored and committed themselves.
I think all the Americans who no longer support our President to the point of saying he is worse than the terrorists should get a special prize. I think maybe an all expenses paid vacation to one of the newest resorts, somewhere like Afghanistan or Iraq. Maybe they would reconsider their poll choices, but maybe I’m wrong. It is possible that vacationing with a terrorist cell may be a treat, they might be great hosts. Some of the vacation activities would include assisting with the execution and beheading of local citizens, seminars on proper placement of IEDs in order to cause maximum damage to a HMMWV, and proper instruction on proper use of suicide vests in order to kill the most civilians possible.
Changes…
December 28, 2006
Well, looks like I’ll be sticking around on ASM for a bit longer. Since I’ll be blogging more I’ve decided to change it up a bit. I got tired of logging in and seeing the same old thing over and over. I hope the new design is well received, it took me a few hours to get it just right and tweaked for ASM. Please leave me comments and let me know what you think of the change. I’d like to know if it’s good, bad, or doesn’t really matter.
Clarification…
December 22, 2006
A Soldier’s Mind will not be going completely off the map, I’ve put too much time and effort into it for that to happen. I will still be blogging, just not as actively as I have in the past. I would like to add other military members as authors on A Soldier’s Mind, much like CJ has done with A Soldier’s Perspective. If anyone is interested in writing on A Soldier’s Mind please either send me an email or leave a reply. I would be interested in any writers who are in the military, past military, or military spouses.
Closed…
December 20, 2006
Well all it has been fun, I’ve really enjoyed blogging. It has been a great place for me to bitch and talk about issues on my mind. As of 1 January 2006, A Soldier’s Mind will be no more. Thanks to all of you for your support.
My latest rants…
November 13, 2006
I’ve noticed some serious differences in the caliber of Soldiers being trained as of late. With the new even kinder/gentler Army, our new Soldiers no longer seem to “fear” NCOs. I remember when I was a young Private just out of AIT I feared Sergeants and thought Staff Sergeants were king of the world. Lately I’ve noticed that new Soldiers fresh from AIT don’t even stand at parade rest or even properly address NCOs. I also realize that this is a short coming of my fellow NCOs who allow these junior Soldiers to get away with this behavior. I have been all over these new Soldiers, ensuring they are receiving the proper “corrective training”. My question is has anyone else noticed this behavior, or am I just becoming one of those grumpy/asshole NCOs that I used to hate when I was a Private?
Recruiting the best…
October 20, 2006
This morning I received an email from a worried mother whose son is considering joining the United States Army. She asked me for my opinions on the Army as well as informed me that she is trying to lean her son more towards the Air Force. I wrote her back with my opinions on the Army, as well as my opinions on the other Armed Services. I would like my readers to please leave their opinions, pros, cons and other information on all four services. Hopefully this will help her and her son make an informed decision.
Army Strong…
October 17, 2006
Well the Army has spent a billion dollars on a new five year advertising campaign titled Army Strong. Although I disagree a little that they have spent so much money on advertising and I can’t even get post-it notes from supply because we are short on funds. The new commerical makes up for that though, I’ll just run to the PX tommorrow and get my own post-its. You can check the video out below, it reminds me of the trailer for a new Steven Spielberg movie.
Hate Mail Requirements…
August 20, 2006
I’ve been back in Colorado for about a week and a half now and it sure is nice to sleep in my own bed. I was getting a bit worried because I havn’t had anything to write about. Thanks to some guy named Papafish, now I do.
I opened my email today and found two messages from this mystical creature. Unfortunately Papafish was too cowardly to post his feelings on the website for everyone to read. As I feel he has done this in error, I will repost the emails here and save him the trouble.

Requirements for sending hate mail to me:
- Do not email me your hate mail. Please have enough courage to post it on the website. This will allow others an oportunity agree/disagree with your argument.
- Please spend more than two seconds stringing a few cute phrases together.
- Please don’t call me a jew. First, I have no Jewish heritage at all. Secondly, I prefer to be known as an AMERICAN.
- Please consult atleast a sixth grader and ask him/her for help with capitalization/punctuation and other various grammer related questions.
- And lastly, please phrase your hate in the form of a logical argument. I believe I lost a few brain cells reading those last two emails.
Drivers Training…
June 28, 2006
Over the last few days I have had the opportunity to learn how to drive the LMTV. To some of my combat arms readers this may not seem like a big deal. In reality though, this is a huge deal for me. Someone in my MOS rarely sees one of these vehicles, not to mention learns to drive one. Since I was a little kid I have always been obsessed with large/loud trucks. These lest few days of training have been pretty fun for me.
